The Pilates Method

Pilates is a gentle and safe form of exercise that focuses on body control and efficient movement. The Pilates method emphasises the importance of initiating movement from a central area of stability. It is particularly effective when rehabilitating back, neck and shoulder injuries. Pilates has been developed to stimulate muscle activation and core strength around the pelvis, spine and shoulder improving postural awareness and correcting muscle imbalances that are often the cause of injury. It helps to support general flexibility, mobility and endurance.

What To Expect

You will be attending one-to- one sessions with a physiotherapist to assess your movement and function, and to teach the basic principles of the Pilates method. The initial assessment session can last for up to an hour.

We know that each person’s body is uniquely different which means a one-fit- all model does not suit most of our clients. We believe that a one-to- one approach is more effective at targeting your individual movement and control needs, especially if you are new to this way of moving.

This individual approach ensures you activate the correct muscles in the right sequence in a functional way, which will help you to be more resilient in your daily life and sporting/training activities. Your therapist will target the exercises specific to your individual goals, whether it is to help you manage your back pain in sitting, or improve propulsion for running.

Equipment such as Swiss balls, resistance bands, Pilates balls, blocks and belts can be used to modify or progress the individual exercises to your specific needs. Your physiotherapy Pilates instructor can also skilfully help you to improve your positioning and muscle activation by gentle hands-on facilitation.

What To Wear And Bring

Please wear comfortable exercise clothing that will allow you to move freely. We provide all equipment including Pilates mats.

Your Pilates Teacher

Katy Briggs is an APPI Mat Work trained Pilates teacher (Level 2). The sessions aim to be functional in nature (i.e. exercises performed in various movement planes, NOT just in lying) to enable return to the activities of daily living, sports or hobbies and prevent further injury. As a physiotherapist, Katy has an in-depth knowledge of injury and tissue recovery, which will help in the development of client- centred functional programmes.
